Nearby Fort Stevens consists of a number of large gun batteries intended to protect the mouth of the Columbia River from invasion by enemy naval forces.  It worked.  You can explore the gun batteries and the spooky tunnels underneath them when you stay at the Officer's Inn!  Just ask and we'll lend you a flashlight...
